How to Remove Managed Extensions (Google Chrome)?

Have you encounter a “managed” Google Chrome extension which is pinned on and can’t be disabled from Google Chrome? If this extension is an unwanted browser extension, how could you eliminate it from Google Chrome? This following article provides you a step-to-step instruction of managed Google Chrome extension.

This guide takes LyricsPal extension as an example. If you can’t remove LyricsPal extension from Chrome in a common way, please check whether LyricsPal is pinned on the Chrome by checking Developer mode in the Extension tab under tools.


How to Remove Managed Extensions (Google Chrome)?

STEP 1: Remove suspicious program from control panel

Windows 8
Move mouse cursor to the bottom right corner of the screen.
Charms bar>Settings>Control Panel>Uninstall a program
Remove suspicious program (eg. LyricsPal adware).

Windows XP
Start>Settings>Control Panel>Add or Remove Programs>Programs and Features
Remove suspicious program (eg. LyricsPal adware).

Windows 7/Vista
Start>Control Panel>Uninstall a program/Programs and Features
Uninstall suspicious program (eg. LyricsPal adware)


STEP 2: Write down the ID of unwanted Extension (Eg. LyricsPal)

Wrench or bars icon (top right of the screen)> Tools>Extensions> check Developer Mode (top rid of Extension tab).


Note: You should close Google Chrome before removing a managed Chrome extension.

STEP 3: REMOVE REGISTRY Entries of the managed extension

1. Open Registry Editor Windows XP usersStart>Run>Type “regedit” in the opened window.

Windows 7 usersWindows Logo (Start)>Type “regedit” in Search Programs and Files box>press Enter.

2. Remove Registry Entries of managed extension (Eg. LyricsPal)

In the opened Registry Editor: select HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>SOFTWARE>Policies>Google>Chrome>ExtensionInstallForcelist


3. Remove the registry key with the managed extension’s ID (right click on the registry key and select “Delete”)


STEP 4: Remove Files of unwanted managed Chrome extension (Eg. LyricsPal)

To remove unwanted managed Chrome extension completely, you should also remove related files after removing its registry entry.

My Computer>C:\Users\YOUR USER NAME\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\ExtensionsOr Windows key (a key between ctrl and Alt)+R>typing %appdata%

Remove all directories named the same as the ID of the managed Chrome Extension.
